Mobile Modular Partners with DGR Grant Construction to Build World-Class Lab for Pacific Northwest National Laboratory

Background

Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Richland, Washington takes on some of the world’s greatest science and technology challenges. As one of the U.S. Department of Energy’s national laboratories, they work to advance sustainable energy through decarbonization and energy storage as well as enhancing national security through nuclear materials and threat analyses.

The Challenge

Pacific Northwest National Laboratory requested a world-class facility suitable for collaborative research and development in earth sciences, data science, energy, the environment, and more. DGR Grant Construction, Inc., a full-service industrial and commercial contractor specializing in government projects, faced with a fixed budget and hard deadline, reached out to Mobile Modular—as they have done in the past—to provide a design build project for PNNL. Working in conjunction, DGR Grant and Mobile Modular arrived at the exact floor plan PNNL wanted, with 70% completion of the modular building in the factory, and critical finishes to be completed on-site.

The Solution

A total of fifteen modular buildings were set on a permanent foundation to create one 12,000-foot complex that includes a conference room, offices, work spaces, huddle spaces, a kitchenette, bathrooms, and more. The buildings include:

  • 7- 14’ x 72’ modular buildings
  • 6- 14’ x 54’ modular buildings
  • 2- 13’ x 30’ modular buildings

    • Site preparation was completed at the same time as buildings were being fabricated. Working simultaneously on “two fronts” created a significant time advantage. Including design time, this project took 16 months from start to finish.
